Saints-Seahawks

If Seattle wins this game, then forget it. But really, folks, there is just no way that’s happening. You can refer to our NFC Worst post to see how bad the Seahawks are numbers-wise. Sure, they beat the Rams. Big deal. St. Louis was 1-15 last year. Now Seattle faces the defending champs. The Saints may not create many turnovers, but they’ve allowed the fewest passing touchdowns in the NFL this year. So, Seattle should exploit New Orleans run defense, right? Well, if they had a running game, then sure. Unfortunately, the Seahawks average a measly 3.7 yards per carry. Even though the Saints don’t have many running backs left, they probably won’t need any. Seattle has an awful pass defense, and the Saints have Drew Brees. Need we say more?

Professorial Prediction: Saints- Straight Up and Spread (-10)

Jets-Colts

This one should be a good game. The two teams will likely exploit each others’ weaknesses- the Jets by grounding and pounding against the Colts 25th ranked run defense, and the Colts by attacking a Jets secondary that has given up 24 passing TDs (they gave up just 8 last year). The Jets have a better record, but have had an awful lot of close calls this year. Indy has had some themselves, but they’ve also got Peyton Manning to bail them out. If there’s a weakness in your defense, Manning will find it. With unimpressive depth in their secondary, the Jets better look out.

Professorial Prediction: Colts- Straight Up and Spread (-2.5)

Ravens-Chiefs

Ravens. This one is the lock of the weekend. Take a look at the Chiefs schedule. They have played just one playoff team this season, losing 19-9 to Indy. Oops…They also beat the Seahawks 42-24. Like that matters… Anyway, K.C. hasn’t exactly dominated their cupcake schedule, losing twice to the Raiders, and getting blown out by the Broncos and Chargers. Matt Cassel has had a nice year, but this is his first taste of the postseason, and the Ravens are on the other side. Even without Ed Reed for six games, Baltimore has allowed the third-fewest points in the league. They also post a top-ten run defense, and have given up just five rushing touchdowns all year. That doesn’t bode well for Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones.

Professorial Prediction: Ravens- Straight Up and Spread (-3)

Packers-Eagles

The Pack have looked pretty good in their final few games, while the Eagles have struggled. Look for Aaron Rodgers to have a big game in this one. Philly has given up 31 passing TDs this year, and considering how the Packers don’t have a running game, Rodgers will put up nice numbers by default. Both teams have opportunistic defenses, but the advantage should go to Green Bay, because they can get to Michael Vick. The Eagles have given up 50 sacks this year, second-worst in the entire league. Clay Matthews leads a squad that’s taken down the QB 47 times. Sure, Vick will make some plays and, if they so choose, Philly can run it with McCoy. Still, it won’t be enough.

Professorial Prediction: Packers- Straight Up and Spread (+3)

You already share your initials with, well, you know. Don’t draw any more negative attention to yourself. Seriously, you’re making like $4 million a year, and that’s only going to go up after that rookie contract ends. Speaking of rookie contracts, the NFL better get a system in place, because it’s absurd how non-proven high draft picks are getting 30 million-plus in guaranteed money. Anyway, what’s worse about this is how Mayo refused to pay up. Really, how much could we be talking about here? A few thousand at most? We know he’s making more than Tony Allen. Pay the man.
Yahoo! Sports reported that Mayo owed Allen money over a card game and became upset when Allen wanted him to pay. First off, if you’re O.J. Mayo, why are you even bothering to gamble? You already share your initials with, well, you know. Don’t draw any more negative attention to yourself. Seriously, you’re making like $4 million a year, and that’s only going to go up after that rookie contract ends. Speaking of rookie contracts, the NFL better get a system in place, because it’s absurd how non-proven high draft picks are getting 30 million-plus in guaranteed money.

Anyway, what’s worse about this is how Mayo refused to pay up. Really, how much could we be talking about here? A few thousand at most? We know he’s making more than Tony Allen. Pay the man. While we’re at it, let’s also blame O.J. for the fight. After all, Mayo is no stranger to violence. As a high school player in 2007, Mayo “allegedly” assaulted referee Mike Lazo after being ejected. He was suspended for three games.

Oh, but wait. Apparently Tony Allen likes a good confrontation as well. During the 2005 off-season, he was “charged with aggravated battery stemming from an altercation that escalated into the non-fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man outside a restaurant in Chicago.” While not a suspect in the shooting, Allen was accused of breaking another guy’s left eye socket. Nice.

With all that in mind, these dummies probably weren’t even gambling. They could have been playing a friendly game of Go Fish and turned against each other. Couldn’t you imagine…

Tony: Do you have any threes?

O.J.: Go fish!

Tony: Go f*** yourself. You have threes. I saw ‘em already, cheater.

O.J.: You lookin’ at my cards, b****?

*Team brawl ensues.*

While this is yougotschooled.com, there’s really no need to get clever here or throw around insults to bash the Seahawks. The numbers do all the talking. Going into the final week, Seattle has a point differential of -107. That’s 28th out of the 32 teams in the league. Their turnover differential, at -9, is also the fifth-worst in the NFL. In terms of total yardage: a rank of 28th on offense and 30th on defense. How about quarterback play? 13 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Most of that was on Matt Hasselbeck.

The starter for Sunday’s game? Likely Charlie Whitehurst. In his first career start earlier this year, Whitehurst threw for just 113 yards and two interceptions in a 41-7 loss to the Giants. The pass defense? They’ve given up 31 passing TDs, good for 30th in the league.

So, what should we expect for the second Seahawks-Rams meeting of the season? Well, St. Louis won 20-3 back in Week 4. Sam Bradford threw for nearly 300 yards and two scores. Seattle’s pass defense certainly hasn’t been much better since. They have added Marshawn Lynch on offense, but are still dead last in the NFL with less than 1,300 total yards rushing (and no individual is over 500). Even though the Rams are a middle-of-the-road defense, it should be good enough to dominate its anemic opponent.

Prediction: Rams 24, Seahawks 13

This is actually a legitimate prediction. No fooling around. The bottom line is that the Seahawks are pathetic. However, don’t give the Rams all the credit in the world and expect a 41-0 game. After all, this squad is still mediocre at best, and features a rookie quarterback on the road in a huge game. But even if you spot the Seahawks some points for that, it’s not nearly enough. If you’re a betting enthusiast, let it ride on St. Louis to cover the spread of -3. You’ll thank us later.

Take a look…

The beginning:

College- He received one scholarship, to Southern Mississippi, and began his freshman year as the seventh-string quarterback. He saw his first action while recovering from a hangover, but led his team to a come-from-behind win. In his senior year, he nearly died in a car crash after losing control of his vehicle and flipping over in it three times.

NFL- Favre’s first NFL pass came as a member of the Falcons- an interception returned fo

r a touchdown. His first completion? To himself. During his physical after he was dealt to the Packers, he was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the hip, the same degenerative condition that ended Bo Jackson's football career. Doctors recommended that the physical be failed, which would have nullified the trade. Well, he made it to Green Bay after all.

The end:

Forget all the off-the-field stuff. Each time we thought it was over, here’s what happened…

2007- In the NFC Championship vs. the Giants, Favre is picked off in overtime, allowing Lawrence Tynes to kick the winning field goal.

2008- After an 8-3 start and a win against the undefeated Titans, Favre throws just two touchdowns vs. nine interceptions the rest of the way as the Jets fall apart and miss the playoffs at 9-7.

2009- With perhaps the costliest interception of his career, Favre is picked off in Saints territory as the Vikings are in place to kick the game-winning field goal and advance to the Super Bowl. Of course, you know what happened after that.

2010- Whether he plays or not on Sunday, it’s going to be remembered as a negative ending. A poor year for Favre and the Vikings, as this was a team that was supposed to do some damage.

So, what do we make of all this? Well, nobody can sum it up better than Brett Favre himself: “It has been a great run… I think my stubbornness, hardheadedness and stupidity at the time has enabled me to play for 20 years and play the way I've played. It's just the way I've always approached it.” Amen.

Ahh, yes…The sports debate of 2010. Should Michael Vick be playing football? Do you believe in second chances? Now, we focus on President Obama’s recent phone call to Eagles owner Jeff Lurie. Should Obama have praised the Philly franchise for allowing Vick back? Oh, and should the star QB be executed? Huh? It’s safe to say that conservative Tucker Carlson is not in Obama’s corner on this one, or on many other things. While guest hosting Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News, Carlson said, “I’m a Christian. I’ve made mistakes myself. I believe fervently in second chances. But Michael Vick killed dogs and he did it in a heartless and cruel way. I think personally he should have been executed for that. He wasn’t.” How Christian-like of you, Tucker. Carlson went on to say that it was “beyond the pale” for Obama to be “getting behind someone who murdered dogs.” Would Carlson have said the same thing if John McCain was the Commander in Chief who called the Eagles? Obviously, there are political motives behind everything these Fox New idiots say, so let’s take a more logical look at this debate.

What Obama is “getting behind” is the Eagles’ decision to bring Vick into their organization. Is he right for doing that? In a statement released by the White House, Obama thinks that “individuals who have paid for their crimes should have an opportunity to contribute to society again.”

Sounds fair, right? Sure. But that says nothing about the Eagles true motives for bringing in Vick. Really, Vick was brought in to win football games. Is there anything wrong with that? The NFL is a business, and Vick was a potential employer. He was not incarcerated at the time, and was free to sign with any team that desired his services. So, no, technically nothing is wrong.

While the Eagles aren’t at fault, should they be commended? Would Obama have said anything if Vick was on the bench and Kevin Kolb was the one carrying the Eagles into the playoffs? You could say that, because Obama is a sports fan, he is enjoying the excitement Vick has brought to the NFL this year and is trying to make a feel-good story out of the whole thing. That would be a fair point.

On the other hand, if you support what Obama did, you’d cite the remarks from the phone call. Lurie revealed, “So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance. (Obama) was … passionate about it. He said it’s never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail. And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall.”

Whether or not you agree with Obama, there is something to be said about someone in the spotlight being given another chance. The “level playing field” is the whole key here. Certainly, stars are put on a pedestal and given far too many opportunities. But that’s the entire problem. Maybe, just maybe, we can see the potential Vick’s story has to positively impact the general public.

Everyone knows what Vick did, and what’s he doing now. That national exposure needs to be used in an attempt to help lower-profile individuals. Vick’s past actions will not and should not be excused. You may not agree with the legal system, but that’s another story. He was sentenced, and did his time. There are certainly plenty of others who have done their time who deserve a second chance just as much as Michael Vick, but have yet to get one.

It’s refreshing to see that the guy knows a thing or two about sports.
As far as his comments go, Rendell makes sense. “It is an absolute joke. I was looking forward to this. This would have been a real experience. It’s what football is all about.” The game has certainly been played in much worse conditions than several inches of snow. It was canceled based off of a forecast more than anything. Really, the only time a game is stopped is when there is lightning. To postpone it ahead of time because of a snow expectation seems silly.

In looking ahead, the idea of cancelling and re-scheduling games brings up the question: What happens if the game is a more important one? Where is the Super Bowl being held in 2014? East Rutherford, New Jersey. We will be entering uncharted territory for that one, and it’s very possible that there could be a snowstorm in early February.

If the forecast calls for a foot of snow on game day at The Meadowlands, will it still be played? How could it not? On the other hand, would it be fair to have a champion decided in a game where the biggest factor is the awful weather? If Rendell’s Eagles were to be a part of such a Super Bowl, would he change his tune?
